How Dark Chocolate Benefits Health Revealed

The cardiovascular benefits of cocoa and dark chocolate would amount to little if it weren’t for microbes in the colon, according to groundbreaking research reported by Louisiana State University (LSU) researchers at the 247th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society.

More germane, by combining cocoa with prebiotics can improve overall health and dark chocolate with pomegranate, acai and other solid fruits, according to research team leader John Finley, PhD of the LSU College of Agriculture.

Finley explains that when dark chocolate is consumed, Bifidobacterium and lactic acid in the gut break down and ferment the fiber in cocoa powder, reducing large polyphenolytic polymers into tiny, easily absorbed short-chain fatty acids that pass easily through the wall of the gut to confer inflammation resistant benefits to the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of strokes and heart attacks. When prebiotics are consumed with chocolate, the beneficial bacteria multiply, speeding the process and overcoming the efforts of less-desirable bacteria associated with gas and bloating.
